Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has called on fellow parliamentarians to give their backing, in a parliamentary motion, to the ‘Lady’s Tree’ in Dunkeld at the European Tree of the Year contest in February after being crowned ‘Scotland’s Favourite Tree’.
Thus far the motion has attracted 22 MSP signatures.
The 100 year old Scots Pine was nominated by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and beat five other hopefuls to be awarded the prestigious national title and it will now go forward to represent Scotland at the European finals in February. Online voting for Europe’s most loved tree starts on the 1st and finishes on the 28th February and Murdo is encouraging residents throughout Perthshire and Scotland to back the ‘Lady’s tree.’
The ‘Lady’s Tree’ is named after a nesting Osprey that has been resident in the tree for 24 years and has fledged an incredible 50 chicks.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said;
“This is a fantastic accolade for the Loch of the Lowes reserve and for nearby Dunkeld.
“Hopefully, with the backing from fellow MSP’s the ‘Lady’s tree’ will get the much needed publicity that will translate into votes when online-voting opens for the European contest in February.
“Dunkeld isn’t home to too many National Champions therefore this award is extra special and just reward for the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s hard work on the Loch of the Lowes reserve.”
