In a letter to Murdo Fraser, Keith Brown has confirmed that a comprehensive signage plan is to be constructed to advise HGV drivers of the new 50mph speed limit on the A9.
The Transport Minister has also confirmed that both the Road Haulage Association and the Freight Transport Association are running education campaigns to encourage drivers to be more responsible on the road.
Transport Scotland has said that A9 average speed cameras are already affecting driver behaviour despite not being switched on and where cameras are located the number of speeding motorists has fallen.
The equipment has so far been installed on the road between Perth and Pitlochry. The system will eventually extend to Inverness.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“The A9 is due to undergo a number of changes over the coming years and it is imperative that the Scottish Government and Transport communicate with drivers in order to increase safety on the road.
“The A9 is already one of Scotland’s most confusing roads and any move to increase driver knowledge has to be welcomed.
“I was pleased to hear that the Scottish Government is constructing a signage programme to inform HGV drivers of the speed limit change in October. Without new signage, substantial road safety issues could have arisen due to slow moving lorries.”
