Keen historian and MSP for Mid-Scotland and Fife, Murdo Fraser, has given his support to the return of archaeologists looking to explore Perth’s Roman past.
Perthshire plays host to Britain’s most northerly Roman fort, situated on the Gask ridge, as well as many other legionary, camps, fortresses, and military stations.
Archaeologists initially started research in 1996 believing work would only last 3-4 years, however in 2013 investigations are still on-going due to the volume of discoveries.
Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Archaeological digs such as this not only offer us a fascinating look into our past but also grant Perthshire the national and international recognition it deserves for its historical significance. This attention can ultimately result in increased tourism and economic growth for the area.
“There are so many fascinating Roman sites across Perthshire, such as Ardoch Fort and Inchtuthil Fort, which are both part of the Gask Ridge frontier, as well as Muir o’ Fauld and Ardunie watch towers. I look forward to hearing the findings of this study.”
