Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has given his backing to plans from Network Rail to electrify rail links to Stirling as well as decreasing journey times between Perth and the rest of Scotland.
Network Rail has submitted its five year business plan to the rail regulator setting out proposals for improvements across the UK.
Included within the plans is electrifying the line to Stirling, which aims to improve journey time, passenger comfort, and reliability.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“With rail fares set to rise beyond inflation for the considerable future, we must see improvements in our rail network to justify these costs.
“The £4 billion pounds set aside to develop the rail network within Scotland is considerable and I am pleased to see that Stirling and Perth will see some of this investment.
“Electrifying track between Stirling and the Central Belt is a must for tourism, economic development and passenger comfort.
“With continued support Perth is on track to become a major rail hub in Scotland thanks to its central location and good amenities. Decreasing journey times from Perth to the highlands and the central belt is crucial in achieving these aims and I welcome these planned improvements.”
