MSP to quiz SNP Ministers on flood defence scheme funding

Liz Smith MSP has secured a question in the Scottish Parliament to quiz SNP Ministers on the recent flooding in Comrie and flood defence scheme funding. The Strathearn based MSP will ask SNP Ministers what support the Scottish Government is providing to Scottish Councils to bringing forward investment in flood defence schemes. The Mid Scotland & Fife MSP has also tabled a number of Parliamentary Questions regarding funding for flood mitigation issues and proposed flood defence schemes following the announcement that the UK Conservative Government has now provided the SNP Scottish Government with £394m in extra capital funding. Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife said:  “It is clear that lessons have to be learnt following the flooding which hit Comrie and that the preparedness for such events between the SNP Government and Scottish Councils need to be improved.  “I welcome this funding announced by Perth & Kinross Council to take forward the flood mitigation issues in Comrie. However, questions still need to be answered as to why the immediate work which needed to be undertaken following the last flood was not given priority and why the green light was not given to address these flood mitigation issues when it is clear that this funding was available in the Council reserves. “Above all it is clear that many communities across Perth & Kinross continue to face the threat of flooding and that the flood mitigation issues and plans identified in each of these communities have not progressed. The SNP Scottish Government must look to help support Scottish Councils in bringing forward investment in flood defence schemes for homes and businesses in the most at risk flooding areas. “The UK Conservative Government has now provided the SNP Scottish Government with £394m in extra capital funding. “I hope that given the significant additional money provided to SNP Ministers by the UK Conservative Government the green light will now be given to provide Scottish Councils with the resources they need to bringing forward investment in flood defence schemes.”
