MSP encourages local communities to apply for Centenary Memorials Restoration Fund

 Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland & Fife has welcomed the establishment of the Centenary Memorials Restoration Fund. The Mid Scotland & Fife MSP is encouraging local community councils and community groups to submit applications to the fund which will allow communities across Scotland to carry out maintenance of memorials as part of the 100th anniversary of the First World War.There are estimated to be between 5,000 to 6,000 memorials to the war dead across Scotland.

Murdo Fraser MSP Urges Caution on Icy Roads

Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has called on motorists to take care whilst driving in Perthshire during the recent cold snap. With ice, snow and blizzard conditions predicted for much of Scotland and Perthshire, drivers must exercise caution whilst on the roads.  So far gritters and snow ploughs have coped admirably with the first serious snow of winter, however resources will be tested further if the snowy weather continues.

MSP highlights opportunity for free insulation

The multi-agency scheme will provide free loft and cavity wall insulation to residents who want to make their homes more energy efficient and reduce energy consumption.The initiative is being delivered by Perth & Kinross Council in conjunction with SCARF (Save Energy and Reduce Fuel) and the Scottish Government.Loft insulation and cavity wall insulation will help householders improve energy efficiency within their homes. UHIS is a free service and is not means-tested, meaning all homeowners can apply.The deadline for applications is Thursday 28 February, and the free loft and cavity wall insulation will be awarded on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

MSP calls on NHS to scrap cuts to emergency surgery services at Perth Royal Infirmary

 Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland & Fife has called on NHS Tayside to scrap its plans to cut emergency surgery services at Perth Royal Infirmary. Over the weekend Liz Smith MSP has been contacted by many constituents and by several medical staff who have expressed deep concern at the impact which the proposal to cut emergency surgery services at Perth Royal Infirmary will have on the future of other services and the hospital.  The Perthshire based MSP requested an urgent meeting with NHS Tayside and Perthshire and Kinross-shire elected representatives. The meeting will take place on Friday (25/01/2013).

MSP welcomes Cabinet Secretary for Health assurance on emergency surgery at PRI

 Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland & Fife has welcomed the assurance from the Cabinet Secretary for Health Wellbeing, Alex Neil MSP that no decision has yet been taken on any change to emergency surgery services at Perth Royal Infirmary. The Perthshire based MSP requested an urgent meeting with NHS Tayside and Perthshire and Kinross-shire elected representatives. The meeting will take place next Friday (25/01/2013).

Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has backed VisitScotland’s £3.4 million pound marketing campaign aimed at encouraging Scots into the outdoors with discount transport offers. The campaign aims to attract tourists from key overseas markets such as North America as well as Scottish holiday makers. The television advert features clips of adventurers enjoying white water rafting in Perthshire.

Scotland has 243 Potentially Vulnerable Flood Areas

 Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife has revealed that Scotland has 243 Potentially Vulnerable Flood Areas. The answer was obtained in a written question to SNP Environment Minister, Paul Wheelhouse MSP. Based on the National Flood Risk Assessment, SEPA has identified 243 Potentially Vulnerable Areas (PVAs) where the potential impact of flooding is sufficient to justify further assessment and appraisal of flood risk management actions.

Murdo Fraser Pushes for National Coal Strategy

During a Members Business Debate in the Scottish Parliament, Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has called for a UK National Coal Strategy as well as a commitment from the Scottish Government to ensure the industry’s future. Coal unlike gas does not have a UK National Strategy. The Conservative member believes the creation of a coal strategy similar to gas has the potential to increase investor confidence both inside and outside the industry.

Make 2013 Your Year of Community Volunteering

Scottish MSPs have joined forces with Focus Scotland Magazine to make promoting community based volunteering their New Year Resolution.  The campaign launched aims to get the Scottish public to embark on a volunteering journey in 2013 whilst raise awareness and promoting community volunteering in 2013.Pledging to support the campaign the Murdo Fraser signed a banner promoting the campaign, which aims to encourage more people in Scotland to volunteer within their community with the hope to see an increase in community involvement throughout the country in 2013.
