Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has lodged three Parliamentary Questions concerning the impact of the Tayside Beaver.
The reintroduction of the beaver to Tayside has created two distinct interest groups. Some farmers have been left cursing the devastation often caused by beavers to riverbanks and vegetation whilst environmentalists have stoically defended their presence as essential in the roll out of native species.
Murdo Fraser has called on the Scottish Government to clarify the status of the Tayside Beaver as a protected species. He has also pressed the Scottish Government on their role in improving communications between the Scottish Wild Beaver Group and farmers. Finally, Mr Fraser asked whether there are plans to create a centrally available resource for those affected by the impact of wild beavers.
Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Trivialities aside, my office is regularly contacted by local farmers concerned at the impact of wild beavers on their land.
“These are serious fears from farmers who have had damage done to riverbanks and woodland thanks to the beavers’ uncontrolled, and unlicensed, reintroduction.
“These Parliamentary Questions will hope to clarify the status of the beaver in addition to promoting the mediating role of the Scottish Wild Beaver Group.
“The reintroduction to the isle of Mull of the sea eagle has been a great success, and the Tayside beaver has the potential to be just as successful, however all parties involved must be satisfied. There needs to be a closer dialogue between those affected, and an understanding that livelihoods can be negatively affected by the presence of the beaver as well as potentially enhanced.”
