Mid Scotland and Fife MSPs Murdo Fraser and Liz Smith have backed a call by NFU Scotland and Scottish Land Estates (SLE) for the SNP Government to address fly-tipping.
Both organisations have joined forces by writing to the SNP Government following a recent spike in incidents of fly-tipping, including many in the Mid Scotland and Fife region.
Scottish Conservative politicians Mr Fraser and Liz Smith feel it is time for the SNP Government to address the problem of fly-tipping, particularly as there has been a notable increase in domestic and commercial waste being dumped on rural land despite the re-opening of recycling centres for household waste in early June.
Commenting, Mr Fraser: “We have seen an increase of fly-tipping incidents in Mid Scotland and Fife and across Scotland in recent months - it is time this problem was addressed by the SNP
Government. Fly-tipping is a scourge on our landscape, leaving unwanted items and waste on land, and resulting in landowners having to pay to remove it.
“I fully back the NFU Scotland and the Scottish Land and Estates who have written to the SNP Government to raise this issue. The two organisations have set out a range of measures which could be used to tackle fly-tipping, and clampdown on it.
“These include increasing penalties for offenders and offering more protection for landowners who have had to clean-up following incidents of fly-tipping.”
And Liz Smith added: “I support NFU Scotland and Scottish Land Estates in their call for the SNP Government to take action on fly-tipping.
“Fly-tipping is a disgrace and action needs to be taken to address it. It is alarming that there has been an increase in fly-tipping incidents, especially given that recycling centres for household waste re-opened at the beginning of June.
“I previously wrote to the Environment Minister, Roseanna Cunningham, to ask if the SNP Government would be taking action on the issue so it is good to hear NFU Scotland and Scottish Land Estates are now putting more pressure on them.”
