At 11 am this Sunday the whole nation will fall silent to remember those who gave their lives protecting Britain. Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser will be laying a wreath at Blairgowrie War Memorial and has urged fellow Scots to pause in respect for those who have gave so much.
The Conservative MSP for Mid-Scotland and Fife had previously lodged a Parliamentary Motion urging support for this year’s poppy appeal. The motion gained support from 50 fellow MSPs and is attached below.
That the Parliament supports the Scottish Poppy Appeal 2012, which was launched in Glasgow on 24 October; praises the work of the charity that runs the appeal, Poppyscotland; understands that all funds raised go toward supporting Scotland's ex-service members and their families; commends the work of 40 disabled veterans who, every year, assemble around 5 million poppies and 8,000 wreaths at Lady Haig's Poppy Factory in Edinburgh; wishes the appeal every success this year and in the future, and appreciates the ultimate sacrifice that so many servicemen and women have made to preserve freedom.
Commenting on Remembrance Sunday Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“This is a time of year when regardless of your beliefs the whole nation comes together to remember those brave individuals who gave so much to protect our freedom.
“This an extremely poignant time of year, and it is our duty to never forget why we wear the poppy.
“This year, once again, I have the honour of laying a wreath in Blairgowrie.
“This is also a time to pay tribute to our brave armed forces who are working in tough conditions across the globe, promoting the goals of democracy.
“I urge everyone this Sunday to remember those who gave up so much for us to live in a free and fair society.”
