Perthshire Conservatives address anti-social issues at Loch Clunie

Perthshire Conservatives Murdo Fraser MSP and Councillor Ian James have met with local residents who live around the Loch of Clunie to discuss how the ongoing issues with dirty camping and anti-social behaviour might be addressed.

Local residents have complained over a number of years about the irresponsible actions of campers, lighting fires, cutting down trees, leaving litter, and playing loud music leading to the disturbance of those living around the loch. Many of those who used to enjoy the loch for water activities and wild swimming will not now visit the locality because of concerns about the behaviour of some of those who camp there and act irresponsibly.

The Scottish Conservative politicians met 15 local residents to discuss possible solutions, including an overnight parking ban, restrictions on camping and lighting fires, and improved signage.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Fraser said: “I have been aware of the issues at Loch of Clunie for some time, but it is very useful to me as part of my summer surgery tour to meet so many local residents to hear their concerns and discuss possible solutions.

“It is very unfortunate that the irresponsible actions of certain individuals are having a negative impact on the quality of life of residents. It is clear that action should be taken, and I will be discussing with NatureScot and Perth and Kinross Council what steps would improve the situation. I have written to the Chief Executive of NatureScot asking for a meeting with local residents, given that the site has environmental protections, and the biodiversity is currently being severely damaged by some of those camping there.”

Mr Fraser continued: “The loch is a beautiful location and perfect for lovers of wild swimming and water-based activities, and it is very unfortunate that many of those who used to enjoy visiting have now been driven elsewhere.”

And local Councillor Ian James added: “It is great to have Murdo speaking directly with the residents and actually listening to their concerns, giving positive advice and taking away actions to help with the issues.
“I know that the residents are really grateful for Murdo’s interest and help.”
