Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Liz Smith, has congratulated schools across Perth and Kinross for taking home gold, silver and bronze distinctions in a new award from sportscotland designed to encourage schools to improve PE provision.
The sportscotland school award is a National Lottery funded initiative designed to help young people engage with PE whilst putting children at the centre of lesson planning. The award also encourages schools to foster closer links with the local community groups in providing opportunities for children to take up sport.
In 2018, a record 673 schools obtained an award across Scotland. In Perth and Kinross there were 17 winners, with four gold awards, nine silver and four bronze distinctions handed out.
Commenting, Liz Smith MSP said:
“This is an excellent initiative aimed at ensuring children continue to be excited about taking part in PE and I am delighted to see so many schools in Perth and Kinross win a gold, silver or bronze award.
“Encouraging children to be active is incredibly important especially if we are to combat growing problems with obesity and diabetes. Exercise habits are formed at an early age and helping children enjoy PE is important in setting out good practice.
“I would encourage schools who have not taken part in this award scheme to consider doing so for next year.”
