Liz Smith MSP has heaped praised on Perth and Kinross native Laura Muir after her victory in the European indoor 1500 and 3000 metres championship over the weekend.
Liz has submitted a motion in the Scottish Parliament praising her achievement which has been supported by people across the chamber, including fellow Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP’s Murdo Fraser, Dean Lockhart and Alexander Stewart.
Double victory over the weekend capped off a remarkable rise for the Milnathort runner who is now ranked Europe and Britain’s best. Laura now heads to the World Championships in London with medal prospects more than a possibility.
Commenting Liz Smith MSP said:
“Laura is a fantastic inspiration to women and girls across Scotland and I can think of no better time to promote her success than on International Women’s Day.
“Perth and Kinross has been blessed with some fabulous athletes over the years but Laura looks to be amongst the best and is rightly being praised as a once-in-a-generation athlete and I wish her all the best for the remainder of the season and with her studies in veterinary medicine.
“I was glad to see members of parliament back this motion and I would hope that the Scottish Government maintains its commitment to supporting elite athletes across Scotland.”
