Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Murdo Fraser, has pressed the Scottish Transport Minister, Humza Yousaf on the Government’s lack of action in getting cowboy car parking companies under control.
During General Question Time, Murdo called on the Scottish Government to use its power to create new regulations to protect motorists from unfair charges.
Murdo referenced a case where a 90 year old Comrie motorist is being pursued for £100 after keying in a letter “o” instead of a zero into the number plate recognition system at Perth’s Kinnoull Street multi-storey.
Mr Yousaf confirmed that the Scottish Government is working with partners on a national level to tackle the problem, whilst a working group has also been created to decide on what action to take.
The Scottish Conservative MSP will meet with the Transport Secretary over the next couple of weeks and will lay out his plans for legislation to regulate the industry.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Not only is the Transport Minister failing to get the trains to run on time but he is also failing to get rogue parking providers under control.
“The Scottish Government have been sitting on this issue for well over a year and I want to see action rather than warm words from the Minister.
“Too many motorists across Perth and Kinross are being unfairly hounded by parking companies who should have absolutely no right to do so.
“It is well within the legislative competence of the Scottish Parliament to act on this and I will press them to do so over the coming weeks.”
