Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Murdo Fraser, has today during topical questions called on the Scottish Government to green light an independent inquiry into operations conducted by Professor Sam Eljamel at NHS Tayside.
In response, Jeane Freeman, the Health Secretary said that she was concerned by these reports and would continue to monitor them.
Hundreds of patients at NHS Tayside have accused the former surgeon of making mistakes whilst conducting operations at the health board.
The BBC revealed in a documentary that despite an investigation confirming he injured patients, Prof Eljamel was still cleared to operate at NHS Tayside.
Commenting, Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“The stories from patients in last night’s BBC documentary were harrowing and these victims deserve answers about what happened during their operations.
“Obviously, as a result of ongoing legal action the Scottish Government is limited in their response but I was pleased to hear the Cabinet Secretary make her concerns known about what has happened. I would hope that these concerns are followed up with action.
“Ultimately, only a full independent inquiry will satisfy patients who have been badly let down.”
