Scottish Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser is urging the SNP Government to rule out more “punishing” Council Tax hikes across Scotland.

He says if the proposals from John Swinney’s government go ahead, they would be “another brutal raid on household finances.”

The plans would see the Scottish Government create four new Council Tax bands which would lead to some Scots households potentially facing bills of over £6,500.

The SNP are also proposing a revaluation of every home in Mid Scotland and Fife which could see households forced into higher bands where they would be hit with “staggering increases” in their Council Tax bills.

The SNP Government consultation on the proposals closed at the end of last month.

Commenting, Mr Fraser says the SNP cannot be trusted to reshape the tax system having already made Scotland the highest taxed part of the United Kingdom.

He added that those living and working in Mid Scotland and Fife are sick and tired of paying more in Council Tax but getting less from public services in return on the SNP’s watch and urged everyone to back a campaign from the Scottish Conservatives to urge the SNP not to increase Council Tax.

Mr Fraser said: “If the SNP’s proposed shake-up of Council Tax goes ahead, it will mean another brutal raid on household finances across Mid Scotland and Fife.

“Those living and working here are already paying the highest taxes in the UK under John Swinney’s government, but he now wants to pile on the pain.

“SNP Ministers’ proposals would also see a revaluation of every home in Mid Scotland and Fife which could see households forced into higher Council Tax bands where they would be hit with staggering increases in their bills.

“The SNP simply cannot be trusted to reshape the Council Tax system and keep bills down for those also seeing their other household bills rising.

“Those living and working in Mid Scotland and Fife are sick and tired of paying more but getting less in return and I urge them to get behind this campaign from the Scottish Conservatives and tell the SNP to stop hiking their Council Tax bills.”
