Murdo Fraser MSP has highlighted the importance of The Black Watch following suggestions that the famous regiment may be scrapped.
A report in a national newspaper stated that The Black Watch 3 Scots battalion could be disbanded as the Army faces large troop cuts.
The battalion, which forms part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, has historic ties to Tayside and Fife, with a particular association to Perthshire.
Commenting on the suggestion that The Black Watch could be disbanded, Mr Fraser, who represents the Mid Scotland and Fife region, said: "The Black Watch continue to play such an important role in the heritage of Tayside and any attempts to scrap the battalion must be strongly resisted.
“Locals will be angry at any speculation surrounding its future and I know they would campaign again to save this world renowned battalion which I would be fully supportive of.
“I will be making it clear to Westminster colleagues that the Black Watch must continue to be protected.”
