Murdo Fraser MSP calls on Council to take action on 'disgraceful' state of Bowerswell House gardens

Murdo Fraser MSP is calling on Perth and Kinross Council to address the “disgraceful” state of Bowerswell House grounds in Perth.

This follows the Scottish Conservative politician being contacted by angry residents at the housing complex, now operated by Caledonia Housing Association.

After the Second World War, Bowerswell House and its surrounding grounds were purchased by Perth Council as a ‘living’ war memorial; the house and cottages in the grounds serve as sheltered housing.

Mr Fraser has a long association with Bowerswell, being a regular attender at the annual Remembrance Day Service and wreath laying ceremony held there on November 11th.

Commenting, he said: “I have been contacted by a number of local residents expressing concern at the state of the grounds and was shocked to see the situation for myself. The grass has been allowed to grow long on what should be pristine lawns. Immediately behind the war memorial itself, where wreaths are laid every November, there is a mound of grass cuttings which is not only unsightly but will kill the grass underneath them.

“Bowerswell is the City of Perth’s living war memorial, and it seems disrespectful to the memory of those who served in two world wars, and lost their lives, to see the grounds now in such a disgraceful state.

“Although the property is now owned by Caledonia Housing, the maintenance of the grounds is a matter for Perth and Kinross Council. In light of the residents’ concerns, I have written to the Council asking them to ensure that the grounds are properly maintained.

“It really is an insult to our war dead that they have been left in this disgraceful state.”
