Murdo has welcomed yesterday's update from Transport Scotland regarding A9 dualling, but has warned that the SNP must learn from their record of failure to date and deliver on broken promises.
The Government’s new Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Transport, Stephen Flynn MSP announced today a £1.94 billion Contract Notice encouraging contractors to come forward and bid for various dualling sections.
He has however raised his concerns, noting the Government’s poor record to deliver on previous promises, including, the former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s promise to have dualled the whole road by 2025.
Commenting, Murdo said, “This announcement from the Cabinet Secretary for Transport is an encouraging start in his new role.
“I hope that he will keep up momentum to get the rest of the A9 dualled, something that his predecessors failed at, miserably. In fact, I thought the main takeaway from this release from Transport Scotland was that an astounding 58 miles of the A9 still needs to be dualled.
“Over the past two weeks there have been two occasions in which the A9 has been completely shut in both directions again, once for a fire and sadly, another crash. Improvements are needed to protect lives and to stop the constant disruption on this lifeline trunk road.”
