Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Murdo Fraser, has welcomed a change in position from Transport Scotland on the A9 dualling at Killiecrankie but has cautioned their latest plan doesn’t go far enough to protect the historic battlefield.
Transport Scotland have proposed reducing the length of the slip road at the Aldclune Junction and steepening the earthworks between Allt Girnaig and Urrard House. These measures when taken together will reduced the footprint of the dualled road on the battlefield.
As part of this announcement Transport Scotland have invited community groups to have their say on these design refinements and a public display will be held at Killiecrankie village hall.
Transport Scotland surveyed more than 18 hectares and have found 1,432 metal objects including 33 that date back to the battle.
Commenting, Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“I am pleased to see some movement from Transport Scotland but unfortunately the design changes don’t go far enough when it comes to protecting the battlefield.
“Whilst, this is a good starting point more work needs to be done to ensure that the finalised plans meet the expectations of residents in the area.
“These new plans will be on show at Killiecrankie Village Hall and I would encourage local residents to take a look and have their say.
“The fact that so many artefacts have already been excavated suggests that there is still so much to be dug from underneath the battlefield.
“Ultimately, Transport Scotland must engage further with residents on the route and I hope they do so over the coming months prior to reaching a final decision.”
