In a parliamentary question response to Murdo Fraser MSP, the Scottish Government has confirmed that a final decision on the A9 route between Pass of Birnam and Tay Crossing will be made by the end of the year.
Route planning for the soon-to-be dualled road through Birnam and Dunkeld is particularly complex as a result of the train station and houses that border the route.
Local residents have organised themselves to present their preferred option to Transport Scotland and the Scottish Government. The A9 Co-Creative Group believe that a 1.5 kilometre ‘cut and cover’ tunnel passing Birnam and Little Dunkeld, with an at-grade roundabout at Dunkeld, a left-in, left-out junction at the Hermitage and a full movement grade separated junction at both Dalguise and Murthly Castle is the best option for both residents and motorists.
Murdo has called on the Scottish Government to properly engage with residents to find a solution that works for everyone.
Commenting ,Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“The Pass of Birnam to Tay Crossing section of the A9 will be one of the most difficult to complete and it is important that Transport Scotland and the Scottish Government properly listens to the views of local residents.
“Over 700 local residents were recently polled on their views and the A9 Co-Creative Group have outlined their preferred option, which includes a roundabout and tunnel, and it is now up to the Scottish Government to deliver on this.
“In responding to my question in parliament, the Transport Minister has confirmed that a decision will be made by the end of the year and it is important that the new route works for both road users and residents.”
