Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Liz Smith, has raised concerns over an increase in crime in Fife, following figures released by the Scottish Government.
Statistics have revealed that crime in Fife is up by 4%, with crimes and offences totalling 31,027.
Crimes of a sexual nature were up by 16% with a total of 1,119 assaults in the past year and crimes of dishonestly increased by 7% with a total of 6,476 recorded cases.
Recent Police Scotland strength statistics have shown a marginal reduction in the number of police officers on the beat in Fife.
Commenting, Liz Smith MSP said:
“It is disappointing to see an increase in crime in Fife over the course of the past year.
“Ensuring communities are safe should be the Scottish Government’s number one priority.
“Police in Fife perform incredibly well under real pressure but it is high time they were funded and supported with the resources to do their job.
“Unfortunately, the situation in Scotland now is that, should you commit a crime, you have more chance of not being caught than being brought to justice.
“Constituents frequently raise the standard of policing with me and they are clear in their hope to see more officers on the beat to make their communities safe.
“Ultimately, the Scottish Government must work harder to support our police officers and these figures must act as a wake-up call for those in charge.”
