As an MSP representing both Cupar and Blairgowrie, Murdo Fraser MSP, has taken the dangerous step of congratulating, in a parliamentary motion, Blairgowrie RFC for their 172-0 win over Howe of Fife 2nd XV at the weekend.
However, in an attempt to appease both sides, Murdo praised the hard work and desire of the 12 men of Fife, all veterans, who toiled for 80 minutes despite being three men short.
Blairgowrie’s impressive victory is still someway short of the world record thrashing which was handed out in the Belgian First division when Royal Kituro beat Soignies 356-3.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Well done to Blairgowrie for securing a record win but also to Howe of Fife for fielding a team despite being 3 players short and with all twelve in the latter stages of their rugby careers.
“I believe that Howe of Fife were left short due to injuries, first team call-ups and youth players being away, however, despite this the team have shown tremendous spirit in putting out a team to play. If things get desperate again I’d like to remind them that I’m only a phone call away.
“It so happens that the president of Howe of Fife is also called Murdo Fraser (no relation) and I would like to wish my namesake all the best for the remainder of the season. Presumably things can’t get much worse, but if they do he could always duck for cover and assume the persona of a regional member of the Scottish Parliament.”
