A ‘Friends of the Earth’ survey has named Atholl Street in Perth as Scotland’s sixth most polluted road. When measured for nitrogen dioxide Atholl Street was 15.5 microgrammes over the European standard.
Nitrogen dioxide can irritate the airways of the lungs and increase the symptoms of lung diseases. Fine particles can also cause inflammation and even worsen lung and heart problems.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“These figures must serve as a warning to the Scottish Government as they are responsible for improving air quality in Scotland’s busiest cities.
“Perth city centre has witnessed numerous improvements in recent years however the level of pollution on Atholl Street is a concern for residents and shop owners.
“The use of Eco-buses and implementing low emission zones will no doubt improve the air quality on Atholl Street.
“Ultimately there will always be localised hotspots of reduced air quality but we must see a concerted effort from the Scottish Government to reduce these harmful toxins.”
