Fair city residents undertake the fourth most amount of physical activity in the whole of Scotland according to a report that will be presented to the Scottish Parliament’s Health and Sport committee this week.
Liz Smith MSP has welcomed Perth’s level of fitness but believes things can improve further, with 15% of respondents still classing themselves as inactive.
The study of more than 3000 people highlighted the percentage of non-participants in regular sport or physical activity based on postcode.
Dundee came behind Perth with 83% of respondents completing 150 minutes of activity.
Commenting Liz Smith MSP said:
“It is hugely important to participate in regular activity with exercise crucial to a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
“Therefore it is encouraging to see that the number of people in Perth completing 150 minutes of activity is amongst the highest in Scotland. However, there is always room for improvement. The Scottish Government must tackle inactivity amongst women with respondents citing family pressures and confidence issues as primary reasons for not working out.
“We have recently released a paper on improving Scotland’s health and lifestyle and I would urge the Government to consider its proposals if we are to improve access to exercise across the country.”
