A freedom of Information request has shown that 30% of Tayside Fire fighters were unfit, the UK average was 10%. Figures were worse in Strathclyde where of the 652 tested, 435 were "unfit" fire-fighters, of whom 111 were "seriously unfit".
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said it could not explain why Scotland's figures were worse than the rest of the UK but it has started a review of working practices.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said;
“For their protection and for those they serve, fire-fighters must show the best possible levels of physical fitness.
“Whilst it is disappointing to see 30% of Tayside fire-fighter’s miss the fitness targets, I am sure that with the correct support, that figure can be reversed.
“Due to the extremely physical nature of a fire-fighter’s job, being in good health does substantially reduce risk of injury.
The Scottish Government should look to educate those currently serving in the fire service regarding fitness and maintaining good health.”
