Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has expressed concern that over 8,000 people in Perth and North Perthshire have no qualifications.
Figures released by the Universities and Colleges Union detail a national average of 10.6% with no qualifications, however in Perth and North Perthshire the number lies well above this at 13.2%.
Commenting Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“These figures are a concern. Unfortunately education is failing too many of our school leavers. It is alarming that the Perth and North Perthshire workforce is in the bottom third of UK constituencies when assessed for qualifications.
“For some residents having no qualifications will not have prevented them from gaining employment, as they might possess other transferable skills.
“However, in an incredibly competitive employment market, job seekers must be equipped with the best possible tools to find work and that often means having qualifications.
“These figures also demonstrate the reckless short-sightedness of Scottish Government cuts to college funding. Colleges equip students with the confidence and skills to find employment. Colleges also have the power to identify and fill gaps in the labour market, and for this reason alone, we must protect college budgets.”
